Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Derek Dorsett
Derek Dorsett was born on December 20, 1986. The gritty winger established himself as a threat while playing for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League, where he was part of the teams WHL Championship.

Dorsett was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets 189th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and spent the 200708 season with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. In 2008-09 Dorsett would appear in 52 games for the Blue Jackets, racking up 150 minutes in penalties.

Dorsett's physical play and willingness to drop the gloves made him a favourite among Blue Jackets fans over the next two seasons. In 2011-12, he scored a career-high 12 goals while putting up an NHL most 235 minutes in penalties.

Dorsett joined Salzburg EC of the Austrian Elite League during the NHL work stoppage in 2012. When play resumed in the NHL, Dorsett re-joined the Blue Jackets. He would appear in 24 games for the club before being traded at the NHL trade deadline to the New York Rangers as part of the deal that saw the Blue Jackets acquire Marian Gaborik.

On June 27, 2014, Dorsett was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for a third round draft pick.
