Oskar Osala was born on December 26, 1987 in Vaasa, Finland. In 2005, he joined the Mississauga IceDogs of the OHL and was subsequently drafted by the Washington Capitals in 2006.

In December of 2008, Osala got his first taste of NHL action, joining the Capitals for two games, before being reassigned to their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, for the Bears' run to the Calder Cup.

On March 3, 2010, the NHL trade deadline, Osala was sent to the Carolina Hurricanes as part of a deal that saw the Capitals acquire Joe Corvo.
