Jon Matsumoto was born on October 13, 1986 in Ottawa, Ontario. A product of Bowling Green University, he was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Matsumoto made his professional debut in the American Hockey League with the Philadelphia Phantoms in the late stages of the 2006-07 season, seeing action in 16 games. The following year he collected 20 goals in his first full season with the club.

On June 25, 2010, Matsumoto was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a seventh round draft pick. He would get his first taste of NHL action in November of the same year. He would appear in 13 games for the Hurricanes and record the first two goals of his career.

On January 18, 2012, Matsumoto was on the move again. This time traded to the Florida Panthers along with Mattias Lindstrom in exchange for A.J. Jenks and Evgeny Dadonov.
