Ryan White was born on March 17, 1988 in Brandon, Manitoba. A standout for the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League, he was selected 66th overall at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens.

White began his professional career with the Canadiens' AHL affiliate in Hamilton in 2008. On November 5, 2009 he was called up to Montreal and made his NHL debut against the rival Boston Bruins.

After the 2013-14 season, White left the Canadiens as an unrestricted free agent and signed a one year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. In 73 games for the Flyers during the 2015-16 season, White recorded a career-best 11 goals to go along with five assists and 101 penalty minutes.

In the summer of 2016, as an unrestricted free agent, White signed a deal with the Arizona Coyotes and would join the club the for the 2016-17 season. His time in Arizona would be short-lived however. He was traded in the days leading up to the Minnesota Wild along with teammate Martin Hanzel in exchange for a package of draft picks.
