Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Shawn Matthias
Shawn Matthias was born February 19, 1988 in Mississauga, Ontario. The second round, 47th overall selection of the Detroit Red Wings in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Matthias is a graduate of the Ontario Hockey League's Belleville Bulls.

A hard checking forward, Matthias broke out in his third season in the OHL with Belleville registering 38 goals, 35 assists for 73 points. He bettered that point total in his fourth and final season in the league recording a personal high 79 points. Midway through the season, Mattias was dealt by Detroit Red Wings to the Florida Panthers. He would go on to lace up his skates in his first NHL game for the Panthers during the 2007-08 season and score the first two goals of his career on January 19, 2008.

After seven seasons in the Panthers organization, Matthias was traded along with Jacob Markstrom to the Vancouver Canucks for Roberto Luongo and Steven Anthony.

Matthias only played two seasons in Vancouver. In 2014-15 he scored a career-high 18 goals and added nine assists. That summer, as an unrestricted free agent he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He would appear in 51 games for the Leafs, scoring six times, before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Colin Smith. Matthias would finish the season with Colorado and would become a free agent at season's end. On July 1, 2016, he signed a deal with the Winnipeg Jets.
