Matt D'Agostini was born October 23, 1986 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The sixth round, 190th overall draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, D'Agostini honed his skills in the Ontario Hockey League with the Guelph Storm.

A great two-way forward, D'Agostini tallied 79 points in his second and final season of junior hockey in the OHL. He made his professional hockey debut the following season with the Canadiens' AHL affiliate in Hamilton, registering a respectable 49 points. In 2007-08, D'Agostini was a regular in the Hamilton Bulldogs' line-up, however he was called up for in a single game with the Montreal Canadiens.

In 2008-09, Matt would appear in 53 games for the Canadiens, notching the first 12 goals of his NHL career.

On March 2, 2010, one day prior to the NHL trade deadline, D'Agostini was traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Aaron Palushaj.

D'Agostini would spend the better part of two and half seasons with St. Louis Blues, scoring a career-best 21 goals in 2010-11. On March 22, 2013 D'Agostini's time in St. Louis would come to an end. He was traded to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a package of draft picks. He would appear in 13 games for the Devils for the Devils in the late stages of the season, scoring twice and adding a pair of assists.

At year's end D'Agostini was an unrestricted free agent and on July 10, 2013 he inked a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His time in Pittsburgh would be short-lived however. After just eight games for the club he was put on waivers and subsequently claimed by the Buffalo Sabres.
