Chris Butler was born on October 27, 1986, he was a fourth round selection of the Buffalo Sabres in 2005. He is an alum of the University of Denver, though he left school after his junior year to join the Sabres in 2008.
Though he split time between Buffalo and the Sabres AHL affiliate Protland during the 2008-09 season, Butler impressed and stayed with the big club for 47 games.
In the summer of 2011, Butler's time in Sabres' organization would come to an end. He was traded along with Paul Byron to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Robyn Regehr and Ales Kotalik.
In Calgary, Butler would develop into a solid NHL defender and would serve as a stabilizing presence on the Flames back end. His strong play did not go unnoticed, as he was named to the American team at the World Championships in 2012 and 2013, capturing the bronze medal in 2013.
On July 16, 2014, Butler signed as an unrestricted free agent with the St. Louis Blues.
