T.J. Hensick was born December 10, 1985 in Lansing, Michigan. The third round, 88th overall selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Hensick is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

An offensively gifted player, Hensick capped off a four-year stint at the University of Michigan with a league high 69-point season. He made his professional hockey debut with the Avalanche's AHL affiliate in Lake Erie, and was recalled by Colorado on four occasions which led to his appearance in 31 NHL games. Despite appearing in only 50 AHL games that year, Hensick was Lake Erie's second-leading scorer.

On June 17, 2010, Hensick was sent to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Julian Talbot.
