Louis Robitaille was born March 16, 1982 in Montreal, Quebec. A free-agent signing of the Washington Capitals in the summer of 2004, Robitaille honed his skills as a member of the QMJHLs Montreal Rocket.

A hard-nosed winger, Robitaille played three seasons in the QMJHL before splitting his first season as a professional between the UHL's Quad City Mallards and the AHL's Portland Pirates. In 2004-05, Robitaille was a mainstay in the Portland lineup and continued to play an aggressif game for the better part of two more seasons while seeing his first NHL action with the Caps during the latter stages of the 2005-06 season.

Despite only playing a couple of games with the Caps, Robitaille a key player with the AHL's Hershey Bears as they went on to capture their first Calder Cup title since 1997.
