Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Daniel Winnik
Daniel Winnik was born March 6, 1985 in Toronto, Ontario. The ninth round, 265th overall selection of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Winnick is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire.

A strong skating forward, Winnick spent three years at the University of New Hampshire, collecting 95 points in 118 games. He made the jump to the pro ranks when he appeared with the San Antonio Rampage on April 6, 2006 after his season in New Hampshire had expired. The following season he became a regular in the Rampage line-up, appearing in 66 games the right-winger tallied 21 points.

In his first NHL game, Winnick scored the game-winning goal as a member of the Phoenix Coyotes. He went on to appear in 79 games with the club that season and recorded a respectable 26 points.

On June 26, 2010, Winnik was shipped from Phoenix to Colorado in a deal that saw the Avalanche give up a fourth round draft pick.

After a little more than a year and a half in Colorado, Winnik would find himself on the move again. At the 2012 NHL trade deadline he was traded, along with TJ Galliardi, to the San Jose Sharks for a package that included Jamie McGinn.

On July 20, 2012, Winnik was signed as a free agent by the Anaheim Ducks.

Winnik spent two years with the Ducks before he signed as an unrestricted free agent with his home town team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, to a one year contract.

Part way through the 2014-15 season, with the Maple Leafs out of contention, Winnik was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Zach Sill and a second and fourth round draft pick.

As a free agent in the summer of 2015, Winnik returned to the Maple Leafs by signing a two year contract. His second stint with the Maple Leafs would be as short-lived as his first however. On February 28, 2015, Winnik was traded to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Connor Carrick, Brooks Laich and second round pick.
