Ben Walter was born May 11, 1984 in Beaconsfield, Quebec. The fifth round, 160th overall selection of the Boston Bruins in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Walter is a graduate of UMass-Lowell.
The son of former NHLer Ryan Walter, Ben played three seasons at UMass-Lowell registering 90 points (49-41-90) while leading his team in scoring in his Junior year and Hockey East in goals with 26. A Hockey East Second All-Star Team, Walter foregoed his Senior year to join the AHL's Providence Bruins.
Following some strong play in the AHL, Boston summoned the rookie forward and he went on to make his NHL debut with the Bruins that season. He saw limited action in the Bruins lineup following season, spending most of his time with the club's AHL affiliate in Providence. Prior to the start of the 2007-08 season, Walter was dealt to the New York Islanders in exchange for Petteri Nokelainen.
