Brett Carson was born on November 29, 1985 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He began his junior career with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL before being moved to the Calgary Hitmen in 2003.
Drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2004, Carson began his profession career with the club's ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades in 2006 before joining the Albany River rats of the AHL for the majority of the next three seasons.
In 2008-09, Carson made his NHL debut, appearing in five games for Carolina.
Carson managed to appear in 54 games for the Hurricanes during the 2009-10 season, but found himself back in the American Hockey League for the start of the 2010-11 campaign. Though he did get into 13 games for the Hurricanes, he was placed on waivers and claimed by the Calgary Flames on February 28, 2011.
