Dane Byers was born February 21, 1986 in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. The second round, 48th overall selection of the New York Rangers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Byers honed his skills in the WHL with the Prince Albert Raiders.
An aggressive forward, Byers capped off his four-year stint with the Raiders by registering a career-high 48 points. After a brief five game appearance with the Rangers' AHL affiliate in Hartford in 2005-06, Byers was a regular on the club's roster over the next few seasons. His hard work paid off in his 2007-08 campaign as the Rangers called the Nipawin, Saskatchewan native up for a single game.
On November 12, 2010, Byers was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Chad Kolarik.
The Blue Jackets assigned Byers to the Springfield Falcons of the AHL, where Byers had nine goals and 25 points in 48 games. On February 28, 2011, Byers was once again on the move. Along with Rostislav Klesla. he was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Scottie Upshall and Sami Lepisto. As a result of the midseason trades, Byers established an AHL record for most games played in a season, with 84.
Byers would rejoin the Blue Jackets on July 11, 2011, signing with the club as an unrestricted free agent.
On July 5, 2012, Byers signed on with the Edmonton Oilers. He was assigned to the clubs AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons, to begin the 201213 season. On April 2, 2013, Byers was traded by the Oilers to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Garrett Stafford.
