Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ladislav Smid
Latislav Smid was born February 1, 1986 in Frydlant, Czech Republic. Drafted 9th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Smid spent three seasons with HC Liberec in the Czech League before making his debut in North America.

A sizeable and steady defenceman, Smid joined the Mighty Ducks' AHL affiliate in Portland and completed his first season of professional hockey in North America. Despite finishing third in scoring by defenceman on the Portland line-up the Ducks opted to trade Smid, teammate Joffrey Lupul, a 1st round selection in 2007, a conditional 1st round selection and a 2nd round selection in 2008 in exchange for Edmontons Chris Pronger.

The trade to Edmonton worked out well for Smid. In his first season with the Oilers he became a regular on the blueline and appeared in 77 games with the club, including his NHL debut on October 5, 2006.

With the Oilers, Smid would grow into a strong and reliable NHL defender, providing the club with a physical presence on the back end. Popular with teammates and fans alike, Smid consistently ranked amongst the NHL's blocked shot leaders.

On November 8, 2013, Smid's time in Edmonton would come to an end. He would not have far to travel however. He was traded to the Calgary Flames along with Olivier Roy for Roman Horak and Laurent Brossoit.

Internationally, Smid represented his homeland at three straight World Junior Championships (2004-2006), at the 2007 and 2013 World Championships, as well as the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
