Rob Collins was born July 16, 1979 in Whitby, Ontario. A free-agent signing by the New York Islanders in the summer of 2002, Collins is a graduate of the OHL's Barrie Colts.

A skilled forward, Collins spent three seasons in Barrie registering 173 points (77-96-173) before making his professional debut with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers in 2002-03. Collins went on to play three full seasons in the AHL before getting his first taste of the NHL during the 2005-06 season.
