Nick Tarnasky was born August 2, 1982 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. The ninth round, 287th overall selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Tarnasky honed his skills in the WHL with stops in Vancouver, Kelowna and Lethbridge.

Coming off his most productive season in 2003-04 as a member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Tarnasky, who registered 49 points (26-23-49) made his professional debut with the AHL's Springfield Falcons in 2004-05.

After a year of seasonng in 2004-05, Tarnasky made his NHL debut with Tampa in 2005-06 while continuing to hone his skills in the AHL. He became a regular on the Lightning wing through 2006-07 season, and was re-signed by the club to a three-year contract in June of 2007. However, after a season full of struggles the club opted to deal Tarnasky to the Predators for a conditional 6th round pick in the 2009 draft.

Tarnasky's stint in Nashville was short lived. After only 11 games, the Predators dealt the former Lightning winger to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Wade Belak.
