Brett Sterling was born April 24, 1984 in Los Angeles, California. The fifth round, 145th overall selection of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Sterling is a graduate of Colorado College.

A skillful winger, Sterling registered 184 points (108 goals, 76 assists) through his four seasons with Colorado College. He capped off his stint in Colorado by leading the team in scoring with 55 points in just 41 games and joined the Thrasher's AHL affiliate in Chicago for his 2006-07 season. That season, Sterling dominated in the AHL by leading all rookies in scoring and finishing fourth among the league's top scorers.

In 2007-08, Sterling made his NHL debut with the Thrashers and returned to the Wolves' line-up for 70 games.

On June 23, 2010, Sterling was traded by the Thrashers, along with Mike Vernace and a 7th round selection in 2010 NHL Entry Draft to the San Jose Sharks for future considerations. Though he would chose to test the free agent market just days later, signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 3, 2010.
