Andrei Kostitsyn was born February 3, 1985 in Novopolosk, Belarus. The first round, tenth overall selection of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Kostitsyn honed his skills in his homeland before joining CSKA Moscow in 2002-03.
An offensively gifted forward, Kostitsyn played two seasons with CSKA Moscow in the Russian Elite League before making his North American debut in 2005-06. A four-time member of Team Belarus (2001-2004) at the World Junior Championships, Kostitsyn played one full season (2004-05) with Montreal's AHL affiliate in Hamilton before going on to make his NHL debut with the parent club in 2005-06.
Playing in Montreal, Kostitsyn proved himself to be a consistent NHL scorer, recording 99 goals in six plus seasons.
On February 27, 2012, Kostitsyn's time in Montreal would come to an end. He was traded o the Nashville Predators in exchange for a package of draft picks.
