Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Milan Michalek
Milan Michalek was born December 7, 1984 in Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic. The first round, sixth overall selection of the San Jose Sharks in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Michalek honed his skills in the Czech Republic before making his North American debut in 2003-04.

A two-time member of the Czech Republic's World Under-18 team (2001-2002), Michalek also represented his homeland at the 2003 World Junior Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia before seeing his first action in the NHL during the 2003-04 season. In his first season in North America, Michalek played a mere seven games, two with the Sharks and five with the AHL's Cleveland Barons.

Starting in 2005-06, Michalek established himself as an NHL caliber winger. In his first full NHL season he netted 17 goals and followed up his strong rookie campaign with three consecutive 20+ goal seasons for the Sharks.

However, the 2008-09 season would Michalek's last on the west coast. In the summer of 2009, he was sent to the Ottawa Senators as part of a package that saw the Sharks acquire winger Dany Heatley.

Michalek suffered a concussion near the midway point of the 2011-12 season after colliding with teammate Erik Karlsson. At the time of time, he was leading the NHL in goals with 19. He would go on to be selected as a starter in the 2012 NHL All-Star Game and finished the season with a career high 35 goals.

Injuries limited Michalek to just 23 games the following season and he struggled when he was in the lineup, scoring just four goals and adding 10 assists. Michalek would fail to regain his scoring prowess with the Senators and on February 9, 2016 he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of the nine-player blockbuster that saw the Senators acquire Dion Phaneuf.

On the international stage four appearances for the Czech Republic at the World Championships (2003, 2009, 2011, 2012) and appearances at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.
