Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Nikolai Zherdev
Nikolai Zherdev was born November 5, 1984 in Kiev, Ukraine. The first round, fourth overall selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Zherdev honed his skills in the Russian League before making his unexpected North American debut in 2003-04.

An offensively gifted forward, Zherdev is a two-time member of Russias World Junior team (2002-2003) and was the top rated European skater entering the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Having not completed his military obligations with the Russian Army, Zherdev left his club team without permission during the 2003-04 season. According to the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, the young Russian had yet to complete his military duties and the International Ice Hockey Federation apparently did not approve his transfer. Once all was said and done, Zherdev was granted permission to continue his NHL career in Columbus. In a mere 57 games with the Blue Jackets, Zherdev registered 34 points (13-21-34) good enough for third on the team and seventh amongst NHL rookies.

During the NHL lockout, Zherdev returned home to compete with CSKA Moscow where he totaled 40 points in 51 games. He returned to Columbus the following season and was a regular in the Blue Jackets line-up. He went on to tally 27 goals and 27 assists for 54 points that season. After his offensive production dipped slightly during the 2006-07 season, he put together a career year in which he recorded 35 assists, 61 points in all 82 of Columbus' regular season games.

Despite his career-year in Columbus, the club opted to trade him to the New York Rangers on July 2, 2008.
