Dan Fritsche was born July 13, 1985 in Parma, Ohio. The second pick, 46th overall selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Fritsche is a graduate of the OHL's Sarnia Sting.

After only two seasons in the OHL, the Parma, Ohio native impressed the Blue Jackets brass enough to earn a roster spot in 2003-04. In his first season with the club, Fritsche went on to play a 19 games before the club opted to send their 2003 first round pick back to his junior club once the 2004 World Junior Championships came to an end.

A member of Team USA's gold medal World Junior team, Fritsche returned to Sarnia and went on to tally 29 points (16-13-29) in 26 games before joining the Blue Jackets AHL affiliate in Syracuse once Sarnia's season came to an end. With the NHL players locked out for the 2004-05 season, Fritsche found himself back in Sarnia with the Sting and subsequently was dealt to the London Knights. Upon his arrival with the Knights, Fritsche helped the club capture the OHL crown and the 2005 Memorial Cup.

Fritsche returned to the professional ranks in 2005-06 splitting the season with the Blue Jackets and the club's AHL affiliate in Syracuse. Over the next two seasons in Columbus, Fritsche's best offensive year was set in 2006-07 when he recorded 12 goals, 15 assists for 27 points in his 59 games played. After less of an offensive season in 2007-08, Fritsche was traded to New York Rangers by Columbus with Nikolai Zherdev for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman on July 2, 2008.
