Wade Skolney was born June 24, 1981 in Wynard, Saskatchewan. A free-agent signing by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2002, Skolney is a graduate of the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings.
A stay at home defenseman, Skolney went to play five seasons with Brandon, before making his professional debut with the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms in the fall of 2002. After three seasons in the AHL with the Phantoms, which included a Calder Cup title in 2004-05, Skolney made his NHL debut with the Flyers in 2005-06 while continuing to hone his skills in the AHL.
Skolney would see limited action with the Flyers and was left unrestricted by the club entering the summer. On July, 21 2006 Skolney was signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
