Mark Cullen was born on October 28th, 1978 in Moorhead, Minnesota. The undrafted centre honed his skills at Colorado College in the WCHA season in the USHL with Fargo-Moorhead.

Cullen made his professional hockey debut with the Houson Aeros of the AHL registering 25 points in 75 games played. His career in the AHL lasted three seasons with the Aeros before he was signed by the Chicago Blackhawk's in 2005-06. Cullen went on to split the 2005-06 season with Blackhawks and the AHL's Norfolk Admirals and was awarded as the AHL player who best exemplified the qualities of sportsmanship determination and dedication to hockey.

On July 5, 2006 Cullen was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers. As a member of the organization, Cullen would spend the majority of his time with the club's AHL affiliate and see action in three games with the Flyers.
The following summer, Cullen was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings.
