Steven Goertzen was born May 26, 1984 in Stony Plain, Alberta. The eleventh pick, 225th overall selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Goertzen is a graduate of the WHLs Seattle Thunderbirds.

In three seasons with the Thunderbirds, Goertzen registered 60 points (33-27-60) before making his professional debut with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch in the spring of 2004. After getting a taste of the professional game in 2004, Goertzen spent his first professional season with Syracuse in 2004-05, while seeing limited action with the ECHL's Dayton Bombers.

After playing his first full season of professional hockey in 2004-05, Goertzen made his NHL debut with Columbus in 2005-06.

In the summer of 2009, Goertzen signed on with the Carolina Hurricanes as an unrestricted free agent.
