David Van der Gulik was born on April 20, 1983 in Abbotsford, British Columbia and was drafted 206th by the Calgary Flames in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
A scoring star for the Chilliwack Chiefs of the BCHL, he would play college hockey at Boston University before joining the Flames AHL affiliate in 2006.
After three productive seasons within the Flames organization, Van der Gulik was given his first taste of NHL action in February of 2009. He would appear in six games for Calgary, recording the first two assists of his NHL career.
