Lasse Pirjeta was born April 4, 1974 in Oulu, Finland. The seventh pick, 133rd overall selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Pirjeta honed his skills in the Finnish Jr. and Elite Leagues before making his North American debut in 2002-03.

An offensively gifted forward, Pirjeta who represented his homeland at the 2002 World Championships would also make his NHL debut with Columbus in 2002-03 tallying 21 points (11-10-21) in 51 games. In sophomore year, Pirjeta struggled offensively and subsequently was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Brian Holzinger in the latter stages of the 2003-04 season. Upon his arrival with the Penguins, Pirjeta showed off his scoring touch, registering 12 points (6-6-12) in 13 games before representing his homeland for the second time at the 2004 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
