Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Valtteri Filppula
Valtteri Filppula was born March 20, 1984 in Vantaa, Finland. The third round, 95th overall selection of the Detroit Red Wings in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Filppula honed his skills with Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League before making his North American debut in 2005-06.

An offensively gifted forward, Filppula spent the majority of his rookie campaign with the Wings' AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids, seeing limited action in Detroit. The following season Filppula's role with the Red Wings increased as the former Griffin appeared in 73 games with the club and became the first Finish player to complete with the legendary franchise. In 2007-08, he saw action in 78 games with the Red Wings and went on to compete in 21 playoff games en route to the Stanley Cup. Over a month later, Filppula signed a five-year, $15-million contract with the Red Wings and avoided salary arbitration.

Filppula played eight seasons in Detroit, including the 2011-12 season where he scored a career high in points with 66. In the summer of 2013, Filppula left as an unrestricted free agent to sign a five year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In his first season with Tampa, Filppula would set a new career high in goal with 25. He would also add 33 assists for 58 points. He would struggle to find his offensive form during the 2014-15 season, recording just 12 goals in 82 games.

On March 1, 2017, Filppula's time in Tampa would come to an end. He was traded along with a pair of draft picks to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Mark Streit.

Filppula suited up in 81 games for the Flyers during the 2017-18 season, scoring 11 times and adding 22 assists for 33 points. At season's end, as an unrestricted free agent, he inked a one-year deal with the New York Islanders.

On the international stage, Filppula has represented his native Finland multiple times. This is highlighted by a Bronze Medal finish at the 2010 Winter Olympics and an appearance at the 2012 World Championship.
