Matt Foy was born May 18, 1983 in Oakville, Ontario. The sixth round, 175th overall selection of the Minnesota Wild in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Foy played one season at Merrimack College before opting to join the OHL's Ottawa 67's in the fall of 2002.

In his only season with the 67's, Foy registered 132 points (61-71-132) good for second in league scoring and earning a spot on the OHL's All-Star Team and CHL's Second Team All-Star.

Following an impressive season in Ottawa, Foy joined the AHL's Houston Aeros in 2003-04 and went on to play two seasons with the club before making his NHL debut with Minnesota during the 2005-06 season. He split the next season between the Wild and Houston and was used in 28 games for the Wild during the 2007-08 season.

In the summer of 2008, Foy was unsigned by the Wild and was picked up by the St. Louis Blues.
