Jim Slater was born December 9, 1982 in Petoskey, Michigan. The first round, 30th overall selection of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Slater played four seasons with the Cleveland Barons of the NAHL before joining Michigan State University in the fall of 2001.

An offensively gifted forward, Slater played four seasons at MSU, registering 172 points (64-108-172) while serving as team captain in his junior and senior years. A member of Team USA's World Junior team in 2002, Slater captured numerous awards at MSU before making his professional debut with the Thrashers in 2005-06.

Slater's father, Bill, played defensive line for the Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots during this NFL career.
