Peter Vandermeer was born October 14, 1975 in Red Deer, Alberta. Undrafted, Vandermeer's brother, Jim Vandermeer, is also an professional hockey player and an NHL'er.

The Red Deer, Alberta native completed his four-year stint with his hometown Rebels by registering a personal best 21 goals and 40 assists for 61 points. Vandermeer made his professional hockey debut in 1996-97 with the Columbus Chill of the ECHL but over the next four seasons he would see time in Richmond, Rochester, Binghamton, Wilkes-Barre and eventually Providence. After a full season of hockey in the AHL with the Providence Bruins, Vandermeer was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers. He would continue to toil in the AHL with the Flyers' AHL affiliate over the better part of three seasons, registering over 300 penalty minutes in each season. The well travelled Vandermeer continued to bounce around the AHL over the next five years of his professional hockey career. After stops in Grand Rapids, Hamilton, Hershey, and San Antonio he made his NHL debut with the Phoenix Coyotes during their 2007-08 season.

In the summer of 2008, Vandermeer was on the move once again as the free agent signed with the Calgary Flames.
