Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Tuomo Ruutu
Tuomo Ruutu was born February 16, 1983 in Vantaa, Finland. The first round, ninth overall selection of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Ruutu honed his skills in the Finnish Junior and Elite Leagues before coming to North America in 2003-04.

At the time considered the best player outside the NHL, Ruutu is an offensively gifted forward who has starred for Finland in International competition. A three-time member of its World Junior Team and one-time member of its World Junior Under-18 Team, Ruutu has captured one Gold, one Silver and two Bronze Medals in World Junior play.

In 2003-04, Ruutu made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks and went on to finish fourth in team scoring with 44 points (23-21-44) and third in league rookie scoring. Upon the completion on the season, Ruutu was named to Finland's 2004 World Cup team.

After a strong showing at the 2004 World Cup and a career year with the Blackhawks in 2003-04, Ruutu was expected to be an offensive threat on the club's top line. Though, he would appear in only 15 games throughout the 2005-06 regular season due to back and ankle injuries. A relatively healthy Ruutu returned to compete with the Hawks the next season, however his offensive output never matched that of his rookie season. As a result, the Blackhawks opted to trade Ruutu to the Carolina Hurricanes at the NHL trading deadline of February 26, 2008.

Ruutu played in seven seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes, including a trip to the Eastern Conference Final during the 2008-09 season. At the 2014 trade deadline, Ruutu was traded to the New Jersey Devils for Andrei Loktionov.

Internationally, Ruutu has represented Finland on numerous occasions including; World Junior Championship (2001, 2002, 2003), World Championship (2005, 2006, 2008, 2011), the World Cup of Hockey (2004), and the Winter Olympics (2006, 2010, 2014).
