Matt Keith was born April 11, 1983 in Edmonton, Alberta. The second round, 59th overall selection of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Keith is a graduate of the WHL.

Following a five-year career in the WHL with stops in Spokane and Red Deer, Keith went on to make his professional debut in 2003-04 with the AHLs Norfolk Admirals before making his NHL debut Chicago in the latter stages of the season.T he following year he was traded along with Sebastien Caron and Chris Durno to the Ducks in exchange for Pierre Paranteau and Bruno St. Jacques. Keith would spend go on to spend most of his time with the Ducks' AHL affiliate in Portland before he was traded to the Islanders from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Darryl Bootland.
