Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Stephen Weiss
Stephen Weiss was born April 3, 1983 in Toronto, Ontario. The 1st choice, 4th overall selection of the Florida Panthers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Weiss is a graduate of the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers.

A finalist for the OHL's Rookie of the Year honours in 1999-2000, Weiss tied for third in team points and finished fourth in goals and assists and was instrumental in leading his team to the 2000 OHL Finals.

An effortless skater with excellent speed, Weiss is a very creative playmaker with a strong hockey sense. The Whalers top point getter in 2000-01, Weiss led Plymouth in goals (40), assists (47) and points (87) while finishing ninth in OHL scoring. A member of Canada's Gold Medal winning team at the Four Nations Under-18 Tournament, Weiss was recognized as the Best Forward in the tourney.

Voted the Western Conference's Smartest Player and Best Stickhandler in the 2001 OHL Coaches Poll, Weiss returned to the Whalers in 2001-02 leading his team in points with 70 while representing Canada at the 2002 World Junior Championships capturing a silver medal.

Upon the completion of the Whalers 2001-02 season, Weiss was recalled by the Panthers and played in a handful of games notching his first career NHL goal in the process. Weiss dove right into the NHL in the 2002-03 season, becoming a regular contributor with the Florida Panthers. In 77 games with the Panthers, Weiss registered 21 points (6-15-21), before improving on those totals in 2003-04.
