Erik Reitz was born July 29, 1982 in Detroit, Michigan. The sixth round, 170th overall selection of Minnesota Wild in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Reitz is a graduate of the OHL's Barrie Colts.

A skilled defenseman with offensive capabilities, Reitz played three seasons in Barrie registering 78 points (20-58-78) before making his professional debut with the Wild's AHL affiliate in Houston in 2002-03. Over the course of the next three seasons, Reitz continued to hone his skills in the AHL before making his NHL debut in the latter stages of the 2005-06 season.

On the international stage, Reitz represented his homeland at the 2002 World Junior Championships.
