Maxim Sushinsky was born July 1, 1974 in Leningrad, Russia. The fifth round, 132nd overall selection of the Minnesota Wild in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Sushinsky played for St. Petersburg and Avangard Omsk in the Russian League before coming to North America in 2000-01.

An offensively gifted player, Sushinsky led the Russian League in scoring in 1999-00 with 43 points (19-24-43) and registered 196 points during seven seasons in the Russian League. Upon his arrival with the Wild in 2000-01, Sushinsky suited up for 30 games before deciding to return to Russia. In his 30 games the Leningrad native registered eleven points on the strength of seven goals and four assists.

In his first full season back in the Russian League with Avangrad Omsk in 2001-02, Sushinsky established a career high 51 points (19-32-51) before surpassing those totals in 2003-04. In eigth year with the club, Sushinsky established new highs in points with 61 (20-41-61).

On the international scene, Sushinsky has represented his homeland at the 1994 World Junior Championships as well as the 1999 and 2004 World Championships.
