Jakub Cutta was born December 29, 1981 in Jablonec, Czech Republic. The second round, 61st overall selection of the Washington Capitals in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Cutta is a graduate of the WHL's Swift Current Broncos.
After honing his skills in the Czech Republic, Cutta joined Swift Current in 1998 and spent three seasons with the club before making his NHL debut with the Caps during the 2000-01 season. A stay-at-home defenceman, Cutta played three games with Washington in 2000-01 before returning to Swift Current to finish his junior career.
A member of the Czech Republic's gold medal team at the 2001 World Junior Championships, Cutta joined the AHL's Portland Pirates in 2001-02 and spent the better part of the next three seasons in the AHL while seeing limited action in Washington.
