Aleksander Suglobov was born January 15, 1982 in Elektrostal, USSR. The third choice, 56th overall selection of the New Jersey Devils in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Suglobov honed his skills in Russia before bringing his game to North America in 2003-04.

Prior to his arrival in North America, Suglobov played five seasons in the Russian leagues with his most productive season coming in 99-2000 when he tallied 33 points (23-10-33) for Yaroslavl 2. A member of Russia's Gold Medal World Junior team in 2002, Suglobov began his first professional season in North America in 2003-04 with New Jersey's AHL affiliate in Albany before making his NHL debut in the new year.

Over the course of the next two seasons Suglobov continued to toil in the AHL before having his rights acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs just prior to the 2006 NHL trading deadline.
