Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Matt Pettinger
Matt Pettinger was born October 22, 1980 in Edmonton, Alberta. The second round, 43rd overall selection of the Washington Capitals in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Pettinger played parts of two seasons with the WCHA's University of Denver before joining the WHL's Calgary Hitmen for the 1999-00 season.

A bronze medallist with Canada's World Junior team in 2000, Pettinger suited up for the Capitals AHL affiliate in Portland in 2000-01 while seeing action in ten games with the parent club. In his first professional campaign, the Edmonton native finished with 36 points (19-17-36) in 64 games before playing in his first full NHL season in 2001-02. After a solid season with the Caps in 2001-02, Pettinger was back in Portland the following year before playing his first full season with the Caps in 2003-04.

Pettinger spent his next season competing overseas during the NHL lockout and returned to the league in 2005-06. That season, he established new career highs with 20 goals, 18 assists, and 28 points in his 71 games on the Capitals wing. After a somewhat injury plagued season in 2006-07, Pettinger recorded seven points in 56 games with the Caps in 2007-08 before he was dealt at the NHL trading deadline. The trade sent the long-time Capital to the Vancouver Cancuks in exchange for Matt Cooke.
