Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Nathan Smith
Nathan Smith was born February 9, 1982 in Strathcona, Alberta. The first choice, 23rd overall selection of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Smith is a graduate of the WHL's Swift Current Broncos.

An offensively gifted forward, Smith played four seasons in Swift Current registering 212 points (76-136-212) before making his professional debut with the AHL's Manitoba Moose during the 2002-03 season. During his first pro season, Smith tallied 17 points (9-8-17) and went on to make his NHL debut in 2003-04, while continuing to hone his skills in the AHL with Manitoba.

During the NHL lockout in 2004-05, Smith spent his entire season with the Moose and struggled to produce. He would spend the next two seasons of his career in Manitoba and see action in a pair of games with the Canucks. In his final year in Manitoba, Smith tallied a career high in goals (18) assists (21) and points (40) with the Moose during the 2006-07 season. Despite his best efforts, the Canucks opted not to resign Smith who found a new home with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the summer of 2007.

In July of 2008, Smith signed with the Colorado Avalanche as an unrestricted free agent. He was soon assigned to the club's AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, where he was named captain, but had his season ended prematurely by a knee injury in January.

In the summer of 2009, again an unrestricted free agent, Smith would sign on with the Minnesota Wild, inking a one-year deal.
