Tom Kostopoulos was born January 24, 1979 in Mississauga, Ontario. The 7th choice, 204th overall selection of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Kostopoulos is a graduate of the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights where he recorded over 80 points in his final season with the club.

Upon completing his junior career, the Mississauga, Ontario native made his professional debut with the Penguins AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 1999-2000, where he finished second on the team in goals, assists and points and was third in AHL Rookie Scoring before leading the Baby Pens to the 2000-01 Calder Cup Final.

Following two strong seasons in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Kostopoulos suited up for a handful of games with the Penguins during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, before playing in a career high 60 games with the club in 2003-04.

In the summer of 2005, Kostopoulos signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Los Angeles Kings. He would spend the next two seasons with the club and become a regular in the line up.

In 2006-07, Kostopoulos notched 7 goals, 15 assists for 22 points over 76 games played with the Kings before signing a two year contract with the Montreal Canadiens in the summer of 2007.

As an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2009, the popular Kostopoulos would sign with the Carolina Hurricanes ending his time in Montreal.

On November 17, 2010 Kostopoulos was on the move again. After 99 games with the Hurricanes, spread across two seasons, he was traded to the Calgary Flames along with defenseman Anton Babchuk in exchange for Brett Sutter and Ian White.
