Niko Dimitrakos was born May 21, 1979 in Sommerville, Massachusetts. The fifth round, 155th overall selection of the San Jose Sharks in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Dimitrakos is a graduate the University of Maine Black Bears.

The Sommerville, Massachusetts native spent four seasons with the Black Bears capturing an NCAA Championship in his freshman year in 1998-99. A member of the Hockey East All-Tournament Team in 2000 and Hockey East First Team All-American in 2002, Dimitrakos registered 49 goals and 78 assists for 127 points throughout his four years with the Black Bears.

Following a solid collegiate career, Dimitrakos has spent most of his rookie season in the AHL as a member of the Cleveland Barons, while seeing limited action with the Sharks. In 2003-04, Dimitrakos earned his spot on the San Jose roster and was a key contributor throughout the season, registering 24 points (9-15-24) in 67 games.

In 2004-05, Dimitrakos opted to play in Switzerland while the NHL and NHLPA tried to reach a new CBA, before returning to the Sharks roster in 2005-06. Despite spending the majority of the season with the San Jose, the former Maine star was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers at the NHL's trading deadline.

As a member of the Flyers, Dimitrakos would compete in 24 games with the club and spend the majority of his time in the AHL. He headed into the summer of 2007 as an unrestricted free agent and within weeks was signed by the Ottawa Senators.
