Tommi Santala was born June 27, 1979 in Helsinki, Finland. The ninth round, 245th overall selection of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Santala honed his skills in the Finnish Junior and Elite Leagues before making his North American debut in 2003-04.
An offensively gifted forward, Santala played nine seasons in Finland and was a member of its 2003 World Championship team and was instrumental in leading Finland to a Gold Medal at the 2002 Karlja Cup where he was named a Second Team All-Star. In 2003-04, Santala split his first season in North American between the Thrashers and the teams AHL affiliate in Chicago.
