Timo Helbling was born July 21, 1981 in Basel, Switzerland. The sixth round, 162nd overall selection of the Nashville Predators in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Helbling honed his skills in his homeland before bringing his game to North America in 2000-01.
After playing two seasons with Davos in the Swiss National A League, Helbling joined the OHLs Windsor Spitfires in 2000-01. The Basel native played only one season in the OHL before opting to turn professional in the spring of 2001 with the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals.
Over the course of the next three seasons, Helbling continued to toil in the minors before having his rights acquired by the Tampa Bay Lightning in February, 2004. In 2004-05, Helbling opted to return to Switzerland, yet returned in 2005-06 and made his NHL debut with the Lightning while seeing most of his action with the AHL's Springfield Falcons.
In the summer of 2006 Helbling signed as a free agent with the Washington Capitals. Helbling would spend 29 games with the Capitals' AHL affiliate in Hershey and see limited action in Washington. At the NHL trading deadline, Helbling was sent to the Buffalo Sabres with teammate Dainius Zubrus for Jiri Novotny and a 2007 1st-round pick.He would finish up his season with the Sabres' AHL affiliate in Rochester and in the off-season sign as a free agent with Lugano in Switzerland.
