After two seasons in the Slovak Junior League, Bartovic joined the WHL's Tri-City Americans in 99-2000 and spent the early part of the season in Tri-City before having his rights acquired by the Brandon Wheat Kings. In two seasons in the WHL, the Trencin, Bartovic registered 97 points (41-56-97) in 90 games before making his professional debut with the Sabres AHL affiliate in Rochester during the 2000-01 season.

In his first full season in the AHL, Bartovic registered 26 points (15-11-26) in 73 games and over the course of the next two seasons continued to hone his skills with Rochester while seeing increased ice-time with the Sabres.

He split his year in Chicago in 2005-06 with the Blackhawks and their AHL affiliate before spending a year overseas in Sweden and Switzerland.
