Mikhail Kuleshov was born January 7, 1981 in Perm, Russia. The first round, 25th overall selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Kuleshov honed his skills in his homeland before making his North American debut in 2000-01.

A member of Russias Under-18 Team in 1998-99, Kuleshov played parts of four seasons in the Russian leagues before joining Colorados AHL affiliate in Hershey for the latter stages of the 2000-01 season. After two more seasons in Hershey, Kuleshov made his NHL debut with the Avalanche during the 2003-04 season, seeing action in a handful of games while continuing to hone his skills in Hershey.
