Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Patrik Stefan
Born in Pribram, Czechoslovakia, Patrik Stefan suited up for the well known Sparta Prague club where he was noticed by NHL scouts. He came to North America and looked impressive as a 17-year old with the Long Beach Ice Dogs of the IHL. The expansion Atlanta Thrashers made him the first choice overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

An offensively gifted player Stefan registered 25 points as a rookie on the overmatched club but upped his total to 31 points the next year and improved his defensive play. Injuries plagued Stefan's 2001-02 season, limitting him to a mere 59 games while spending some time with the team's AHL affiliate in Chicago.

Stefan returned with his most productive offensive season yet in 2002-03 finishing the year with 34 points in 71 games and went on to better those totals in 2003-04 with 40 points (14-26-40). The following season due to injuries Stefan competed in just 64 games totaling 24 points. On June 24, 2006 the Thrashers traded their first overall pick in the 1999 Entry Draft and Jaroslav Modry to Dallas for Niko Kapanen and a 2006 seventh-round draft pick.

On the international stage Stefan has represented the Czech Republic at the 1998 World Junior Championships and at the 1997 Under-18 Team European Championships.
