Brett Lysak was born December 30, 1980 in Edmonton, Alberta. The second round, 49th overall selection of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Lysak is a graduate of the WHL's Regina Pats.

An offensively gifted forward, Lysak played five seasons in the WHL (1996-2001) where he was WHL East Second All-Star Team (1999) and a member of the Memorial Cup All-Star Team (2001). Following a productive junior career in Regina, Lysak split his first pro season between the ECHL's Florida Everblades and the AHL's Lowell Lock Monsters in 2000-01.

Over the course of the next two seasons, Lysak continued to hone his skills in the AHL with Lowell, while seeing limited action with the Hurricanes.
