Michael Ryan was born May 16, 1980 in Boston, Massachusetts. The first round, 32nd overall draft pick of the Dallas Stars in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Ryan is a graduate of Northeastern University.

A strong two-way forward, Ryan was dealt from Dallas to the Buffalo Sabres in March of 2003. He would spend the next four years of his professional hockey career with the Sabers' AHL affiliate in Rochester, New York. After registering career highs in goals, assists and points in 2005-06, Ryan was used in 19 games with the Sabres in 2006-07.

Traded to Buffalo by Dallas with Dallas's 2nd round pick (Branislav Fabry) in 2003 NHL Draft for Stu Barnes, March 10, 2003. Signed as a free agent by Carolina, October 31, 2008. Missed majority of 2009-10 due to head (September 21, 2009 in pre-season vs. Atlanta) and lower body (December 30, 2009 vs. Adirondack (AHL)) injuries.
