Barrett Heisten was born March 19, 1980 in Anchorage, Alaska. The 1st round choice, 20th overall selection of the Buffalo Sabres in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Heisten spent one season with the United States Under-18 Team and two seasons at the University of Maine before playing his final year of junior eligibility in 2000-01 with the Western Hockey League's Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Anchorage, Alaska native skated for the United States squad at the 1999 World Junior Championships and later that year helped Maine capture the NCAA Championship while earning Hockey East All-Rookie honours.

In the summer of 2001, the New York Rangers signed Heisten as a free agent and he went on to spend the majority of the 2001-02 season with the Rangers AHL affiliate in Hartford while playing in ten games with the parent club before ending up with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies.
