Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- David Tanabe
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, David Tanabe was chosen 16th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. A member of the WCHA All-Rookie Team at the University of Wisconsin, Tanabe is a graduate of the USA Hockey's development program.

In 1999-00 the young blueliner opted to turn pro and split the season between Carolina and Cincinnati of the IHL. In 2000-01 he emerged as a full time asset on the club with 29 points and scored two goals in the club's first round playoff loss to the New Jersey Devils.

A highly-touted defenceman, Tanabe played in the 2002 Young Stars Game at the 2002 NHL All-Star Weekend. A broken wrist limited Tanabe to only one game in the 2002 playoffs as was forced to watch from the sidelines as the team marched all the way to the Stanley Cup final before falling to the Detroit Red Wings. After one more year in Carolina, Tanabe was dealt to the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2003 and went on to play only one full season with the club before heading overseas to play in Switzerland during the 2004-05 NHL lockout.

In the early stages of the 2005-06 season Tanabe was dealt to the Boston Bruins for Dave Scatchard. While with the Bruins the defenceman competed in his sixth NHL season seeing action in 54 games with the club.

Tanabe missed the final six games of the season due to a torn ACL that was surgically repaired in April of 2006, later that year he was signed by the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent.
